Lt. Colonel is a higher grade of the "field grade officers" and would command a battalion (which is 3 -5 companies of men). A Lt. Colonel would also be known as a "Battalion Commander" and have a staff. During WWII most infantry regiments consisted of 3 Battalions.
The rank of Lt. Colonel is identified by a silver oak leaf.

Famous persons: American hero Lt. Colonel George Armstrong Custer held this rank when he was killed fighting hostile Sioux and Cheyenne Indians at the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876. GARRYOWEN!!
